Discussion:
Gammarus (scuds) - do they eat fish eggs/fish fry?

As I've said in another message I'm having problems controlling an
outbreak of hair algae in a breeding tank: it's getting to the point
that the otocinclus and amano shrimp in there actually have trouble
moving around.

So, as the otos and amanos are clearly not interested in eating these
hair algae, I've researched alternatives on the net. One such
alternative are scuds, but as they're omnivorous rather than purely
herbivorous, I'd like to hear the experiences of someone who's had
scuds with small fry.

Do the scuds eat the fry, or do they leave them alone?

It's a good thing to HAVE a cleanup crew, but remember one thing... Algae
isn't as much a problem as it is a SYMPTOM of another, more perplexing
problem....

You also can't remedy your symptom with the method you've chosen, more algae
eating fish....

Suggestion:
Post your tank parameters along with water parameters, what kind of lights
you have, how long they are on, what ferts you use, what your fishload is,
and let some gurus here work on the water balance.... Because, 99 times out
of a hundred, it's either a lighting issue, a fertilizer issue, or a silly
little thing like leaving your lights on too long.... Fix the problem
first, then your algae will go away.... almost promised...

First, you HAVE to remove as much algae as possible, I'm sure you do some...
You may even have to take some peices out to clean them...

I'm by no means an expert, but everytime I ask that specific question,
that's the answer I got.... I did it, listened to 100 people, took several
ppls advice, and now I have 2 tanks that are crystal clear... btw, the only
tanks I have.... what a crime..

Yes, but I only need to create a temporary clearing. The thing is that
the aquarium is teeming with minute fish fry, only about 4-5 mm long
(celebes rainbows). That's why I can't remove the algae manually - I'd
accidentally also remove most of the fish fry!
Right now the fry are basically being held hostage by the algae.
